Celebrating 20 years of stop smoking support!

This year we are celebrating 20 years of NHS Stop Smoking Services in Rotherham.

To mark the anniversary celebrations, Get Healthy Rotherham and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust held a special event at Rotherham Hospital.

Here there was a special ‘Pledge Tree’ where staff, patients and visitors made various smokefree pledges e.g. to stop smoking, to support a friend or relative to quit or to support a Smokefree Rotherham.

Staff from both organisations were on hand to explain more about the stop smoking programmes available, including Get Healthy Rotherham’s smoking cessation programme for adults aged over 18 and the Trust’s specialist programme for smoking in pregnancy.

Smokefree achievements in Rotherham over the past 20 years include:

  • Current quit rate of 70% - higher than the national average which is 50%

  • Reduction of smoking prevalence to 18.3% in 2019

  • At least 24,670 people stopped smoking, achieving well above national and regional performance

  • Introduction of the Rotherham NHS Stop Smoking Service

  • Introduction of Smoking in Pregnancy pathway

  • Free NRT and non-nicotine medications for clients living in Rotherham

  • Opening of the first stop smoking ‘shop’ in the country

  • Introduction of the first telephone support service in the region
