Helping Rotherham people achieve Better Health

This week saw the launch of the major new ‘Better Health’ campaign, designed to help people lose weight, get active and eat better.

Public Health England’s ‘Better Health’ campaign includes a variety of tools and apps, including a Weight Loss Plan app, to help people make healthier food choices, become more active and prevent future weight gain.

Around 70% of adults in Rotherham are overweight or living with obesity. Gaining weight is often a gradual process that takes place over a number of years, and over time this extra weight causes pressure to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and now COVID-19.

We offer a range of different programmes to people aged over 18 living in Rotherham who wish to live a healthier lifestyle. Subject to eligibility criteria, this free support includes specialist one-to-one weight management support for up to six months with one of our Get Healthy Coaches. Many of our clients have lost weight through this programme and one has recently told us how it’s helped change their lifestyle:

“I was referred to you from my GP for help with weight loss after they recommended me for weight loss surgery. You have completely changed the way I look at my lifestyle and my diet, which has changed forever. Your advice and tolerance has been amazing, keeping me interested in losing weight over these past six months and I feel your help is crucial to me not having gastric surgery in the future. Thank you!”

We are also working in partnership with Slimming World to provide a free 12 week weight loss programme to clients who are eligible. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation, all of Get Healthy Rotherham’s support programmes, including the weight management programmes, are currently being delivered on a remote basis.
