Stoptober is here!

The 1st October marks the beginning of the 10th Stoptober.  Thousands of smokers will be making a quit attempt during this month, joining the 2.3 million people who have taken part over the last 10 years.

There are 6 million smokers in England and it is the leading cause of premature death, did you know 75,000 deaths were related to smoking and could have been prevented in the past year?

Recent research has found the pandemic has had an impact on levels of smoking. A survey of 2000 people showed that 45% were smoking more since the pandemic began. The main reasons were boredom during lockdown (43%) and increased feelings of anxiety (42%).  More than half of these smokers said they would like to quit smoking, the main reasons being improving their health (55%) and saving money (52%). Of those surveyed 75% said they would never have started smoking if they could go back in time.

However, giving up smoking is not easy and the most common barriers to stopping, according to those surveyed, are the strength of their addiction and cravings (43%) and feeling stressed (42%).  Although smoking is often seen as a way to de stress the opposite is in fact true. Research shows that while smoking may give an initial feeling of relaxation, this feeling is temporary and soon gives way to withdrawal and cravings and increased tension and anxiety. The nicotine masks these feelings but doesn’t deal with why you may be experiencing them.
