Stopping Smoking with Champix - an update

Earlier in the year it was announced by the Department for Health and Social Care that Varenicline, also known as Champix, was not available due to a supply issue from the manufacturer.

It was announced yesterday that no resupply date will be set until further notice and there is not an alternative supplier, meaning that Champix is not available as an aid to quit smoking and cannot be prescribed. You can read the announcement here.

The advice form the Department for Health and Social Care is that those wishing to quit smoking should use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (unless contraindications exist.) This is a very effective option for aiding stopping smoking and using this alongside support from an adviser will increase your chances of quitting for good. Whether you are already taking Champix or have recently decided to stop smoking you should contact your local stop smoking team for advice.
