School Food Standards

New guidance for caterers has been released to ensure food served at schools outside of lunchtimes adheres to School Food Standards.

Schools are often now providing food outside of lunchtime, such as at breakfast or after school clubs. The guidance was developed to help those providing food with support on what to serve and what a portion is. The advice is based on the Eatwell Guide and it highlights the need for all those who provide food across the day to work together to ensure there is no repetition and a balance is achieved. Food served must not be any of the items that the School Food Standards class as restricted, such as confectionery, pastries, desserts, snacks, crackers, cakes or biscuits. The guidance also highlights the importance of catering for children who require special diets due to allergies or ethical or religious beliefs.
