Simple swaps can make a big difference

Data from around the world is showing the effect the pandemic has had on the number of people living with obesity.

Research suggests that millions more people worldwide are now classed as obese. The main reason for the rise is the result of lockdown, which meant people were moving less, had increased feelings of stress and economic circumstance moving them to make unhealthier food choices.

The NHS Better Health website gives us advice on how to lose weight and encourages us all to make small changes to not only lose weight but also to benefit our health.

Making healthier food swaps is a simple way to have a healthier diet without having to make a big change. Remember small changes can add up to make a big difference.

What swaps could you make? The NHS makes some suggestions about where we can start.

  • Swap white bread and bakery products to wholegrain.
  • Swap whole milk for semi skimmed or skimmed milk.
  • Add fruit instead of sugar to your cereal.
  • Swap creamy or cheesy sauces for tomato or vegetable based ones.
  • Bake and grill your food instead of frying.
  • Choose lean cuts of meat.
  • Make hot drinks with skimmed milk rather than whole milk.
  • Swap sugary drinks to those with no added sugar.
