12 tips to help you lose weight

Have you decided you want to lose weight but are not sure where to start? Have you tried to lose weight in the past but found it hard to maintain it in the long term?  The NHS has 12 tips to help you get started.

  1. Don't skip breakfast - you will miss out on nutrients and you may end up snacking more later in the day.

  2. Eat regular meals - this helps you burn more calories and reduces the chances of you snacking through the day.

  3. Eat plenty of fruit and veg - they contain fibre (which fills you up) and are low in fat and calories. A great combination for successful weight loss!

  4. Get more active - you will burn more calories. Find something you enjoy so you will be more likely to keep it up in the long term.

  5. Drink plenty of water - if you are dehydrated you may confuse thirst for hunger.

  6. Eat plenty of fibre - foods such as fruit, vegetables, oats, wholegrains, beans and lentil will fill you up.

  7. Read food labels - this will help you make healthier choices.

  8. Use a smaller plate to help you have smaller portions.

  9. Do not ban foods - this will lead you to crave them more and you’ll eventually end up overeating. A small, occasional treat will keep on top of a craving.

  10. Do not stock junk food - if it’s not in the house you will be less tempted. Make sure you have plenty of healthy options instead.

  11. Cut down on alcohol - it’s easy to forget that alcohol has calories too!

  12. Plan you meals - if it’s written down you are more likely to stick to it. Making a shopping list will help you not be diverted by unhealthier foods at the supermarket and means you have the food you need at home.

The best way to make changes is to do it step by step. If we try and achieve too much at once it can be overwhelming and we can struggle to stick to our goals. Why not take a moment to write down what changes are a priority to you and then choose one to get you started.
