Why gardening is good for us

Next week (2nd - 8th May) is National Gardening Week and a great opportunity to think about the benefits of gardening for our health and wellbeing. The King’s Fund was commissioned to look into the benefits of gardening. Here are some top ways that gardening and being in nature are good for us.

  1. It has been shown to be good for our mental health, improving our mood and helping reduce feelings of depression and stress.

  2. It helps us be more physically active, improving our health, for example, reducing our risk of heart disease and stroke.

  3. It helps with managing our weight.

  4. It can maintain our strength as we get older, helping us remain independent and able to carry out day to day tasks more easily.

  5. The results of our efforts give us a big sense of achievement - boosting our confidence and self esteem.

  6. Growing our own fruit and veg can help improve our diet.

In the UK about 87% of households have a garden. Even if you don’t have outdoor space there are things you can still do to reap the benefits of gardening. 

-make sure you spend time in some green space regularly.

-grow plants or herbs on your windowsill or balcony.

-have some pot plants in your living space.

It is clear that gardening and being in nature is great for our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Why not use it as a way to relax, unwind and get out this Bank Holiday weekend.
