One more reason to quit

We all know about the impact of smoking on our health but did you know that:

600,000,000 trees have been chopped down to make cigarettes.

84.000,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been released into the environment contributing to the rise in global temperatures. This is the same as 280,000 rocket launches to space!

22,000,000,000 litres of water have been used to make cigarettes and 3.7 litres of water are used to make one cigarette.

4.5 trillion cigarette butts pollute the environment every year.

Tuesday 31st May 2022 is World No Tobacco Day. This year the World Health Organisation (WHO) wants to give you one more reason to quit by highlighting the environmental impact of smoking.

The WHO is raising awareness of the fact that:

  • Tobacco harms the environment by ‘poisoning our water, soil, beaches and streets with chemicals, toxic waste, cigarette butts, including microplastics and e-cigarette waste.’

  • The tobacco industry greenwashes their products to distract us from the harms they are causing - don’t fall for it!

  • The tobacco industry should be held accountable for the damage they are causing.

  • Every cigarette smoked uses up some of the earth’s precious resources that we depend on.

  • Cigarettes produce three kinds of greenhouse gases and increase pollution levels.

Quitting smoking will not only help your health but the health of the planet.
