Move More and Feel Better

Getting active doesn’t have to be a hassle. Doing little things every day to be more active can really lift your mood and put a smile on your face. And every step you take is a step towards feeling great.’ NHS Better Health.

Being more active is not just to do with improving our physical health but also our mental wellbeing. We can all benefit from taking some small, simple steps to get more active. Over time we will notice a range of positives from being more active. It doesn’t have to be anything big. What’s important is that you do what you feel comfortable with.

Let’s start by thinking about how we can all build more activity into our day.

NHS Better Health gives us 9 simple tips for moving more.

  1. Get into a good habit
Set a reminder to get up every 30 minutes and move about, you could move around while waiting for the kettle to boil or stand up during the adverts.

  2. Leave for lunch
Lunchtime is a good opportunity to fit in some activity. Take a break to stretch, move and unwind.

  3. Your own stand-up routine
Try standing when you can instead of sitting – even short periods will add up and improve your strength.

  4. Take up a hobby
Try an active hobby like gardening or DIY.

  5. Track your progress
Set yourself a target - you’ll feel great when you hit it. You could use an app or just write it down on a piece of paper.

  6. It's better together
Do something active with friends or family - maybe you could compete with others to do the most steps in a day!

  7. Go from strength to strength
Aim to do strength exercises (pilates, yoga, even carrying shopping) twice a week to keep your muscles strong.

  8. Reward yourself
Set yourself activity goals and rewards. You could go for a long walk then treat yourself to an episode of your favourite TV show!

  9. Find something you enjoy
Whether it's running, yoga or simply dancing around your living room, it all counts! But try to find something you enjoy so you remain motivated to keep moving.

It can be hard to know where to start when deciding to be more active. Why not choose just one tip above and build that into your day or week. You can build up how active you are over time, as you increase your stamina and fitness.
